May

May is such a beautiful month, and our first graders are just blossoming!  We have been extra creative this month.

This month's math unit introduces children to ideas money, fractions, and place value.  Students will be introduced to the concept of making change, which can be tricky.  We are using the "counting up" strategy to help us make change.  Also, first graders are working with fractions and equal parts.  When we relate fractions to food, boy do first graders get excited (and hungry)!

As we go through our Readers Workshop lessons, students are becoming more familiar with different reading strategies.  For instance, students recognize the sequence of events that take place in a story.  We have been reading nonfiction pieces which give directions and steps on how to accomplish an activity.  We love following directions!

Our first graders have become poets!  We are writing all types of poems in class. First grade is really showing their creative, artistic side.  In June we will have our Writing Celebration and all of the parents are invited to see our poems!  We can't wait!

*All the grades complete state tests during the month of May.  Our testing week is during the week of May 20-24.  We will be testing three mornings during that week.
