Bucket Fillers
In a new twist on the Golden Rule, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? explains to children that we all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our good thoughts and feelings. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when they are empty, we are sad. It's important to know that when we fill someone else's bucket, we fill our own, and when we "dip" in someone else's bucket, we dip in our own bucket, too.
In our classroom, each student has a bucket. Everyone is encouraged to fill the buckets. I have always been a strong believer in the importance of building community and being a school family, so this brings my efforts to light in a tangible way. On Fridays, we empty the buckets and talk about all the ways we have filled our buckets throughout the week. Each student will have journal to paste the kind words they find in their buckets. Student can also express how this made them feel when they received it.
