Welcome 2012!
Second grade is ready for the new year! We are back ontrack with learning in Wandell. As we go through the month ofJanuary we encourage our parents to practice reading with yourchildren, as well as practicing math facts (there is no such thing as toomuch practice!)
In reading second graders will be focusing on thedifferences between fiction and nonfiction stories, anddetermining an author's purpose for writing. In classstudents will practice fluency so that their reading sounds like naturalspeech. This can be practiced at home too!
Start talking about geometric shapes at homebecause geometric shapes and lines are what's coming up next. Together we will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes. Of coursewe will continue to work on our 2-digit and 3-digit addition. It canbe tricky!
With this cold season our penguins unit will fit in quitenicely. Please feel free to research these fun birds on the internetor library with your second grader. This is a fun unit for all of us.
Stone Soup is another fun unit that willtake place this month. Did you know January is National Soup Month? We can't wait to make our own Stone Soup!
......there is a lot going on and weappreciate all of your support at home. What a great start to the NewYear!
