Students will participate in a variety of language arts activities throughout the year. In third grade the emphasis of instruction shifts from learning to decode language to reading and writing for purpose and information.
Read grade-level texts orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression
Use signal words and text structure to determine the sequence of major events
Write a summary by using important information from the text
Inform in an engaging and interesting manner, using the systems in the writing process
Describe events, people, and settings using relevant text-based information
Write informative/explanatory text to examine a topic and covey ideas and information clearly
Write descriptive poems using figurative language
Publish writing using technology
Use temporal words and phrases to signal event orderUse words and text structure to convey and understand ideas clearly
By the end of the year, students will work to identify different elements of stories and respond to reading beyond a factual understanding. They will begin to develop the ability to analyze, infer critique, evaluate, and synthesize information.
